CHAPTER 6

Dez

“Shcho?” I snap into the phone with a groggy voice from sleep. The sun isn’t even up; no one should be ringing me.

“Dez?” My body shoots up at that voice. I know it.

“Nadia?” Vasyl is going to be pissed. It’s been a total of five days since she ran out of here, and I drove her home after fighting to get her to accept the ride. I ensured she knew how to contact me after that because I understood that her stubbornness wouldn’t allow her to ask Vasyl for help if she needed it. “What’s wrong?” I’m already climbing from bed and getting dressed.

I can hear the chattering of her teeth as her breathing grows heavier. “Nadia, where are you?” I have a suspicion because of what I’ve been helping Vasyl with for several days now. He’s hunting—there is no other word for it—for Barkov Metvet. The Russian is the last man for Vasyl to bring down in order to keep Nadia safe. He’s been undiscoverable, though. And now, I think I know why.

Hellfire is about to rain down in Odesa, and I don’t know if there will be any survivors.

“I don’t–. Please help me.” She sounds weak as her voice cracks.

“I’ll get Vasyl. Where are you?”

“No!” Her shout stops me cold. “Please, just you.” My suspicions rise as I quietly leave my room in Vasyl’s wing of the house and creep down to find Petro. Whatever has happened, I get the feeling I’ll need help. “I’m at the dolphinarium, in the back. Honk three times, and I’ll come out. Please hurry, Dez.”

“I’ll be there,” I vow. She hangs up as a loud crash echoes over the line, and my steps falter slightly as I pass Vasyl’s bedroom door. He’s going to be pissed, but my friend needs me more. I don’t have many of those, but in that small amount of time I spent with Nadia, she proved we were friends.

Knocking lightly on Petro’s door, I open it before he can answer. “Petro.” I know he has a knife under his pillow, so I remain by the door. Not wanting to die this morning.

“What the fuck are you doing in here, Dez?” He turns the bedside lamp on and glares at me.

“Nadia called. She needs help.” My fingers twitch to get moving.

“Get Vasyl. It’s his woman, not mine.” He drops back down in the bed.

“I think Barkov has had her. And that’s why we couldn’t find him. We weren’t looking for him at the lighthouse. She’s hurt and hiding. If Vasyl sees her looking anything but perfect, he will go off the deep end.” By far, Vasyl is the calmer, tamer of the three brothers, but if the last few days have shown me anything, he’s creative in torture and won’t stand for injustice.

“Fuck. Fine. Go get the car; I’ll meet you downstairs. But Dez, if he kicks my ass for this, I’m kicking yours.” Petro’s threat doesn’t scare me. I’ve been around far worse men than him.
